Welcome to
Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin
Welcome
Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin has been serving the Hilo community since 1889. The temple belongs to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, a tradition of Pure Land Buddhism, and is one of 32 temples affiliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.
Rooted in the teachings of Shinran Shonin, we follow the path of Nembutsu and foster a compassionate community where all beings live in harmony, peace, and gratitude. We warmly invite you to visit, listen to the Dharma, and be part of our community. All are welcome at Hilo Betsuin!
Attend Services
Sunday Service: Every Sunday, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Join us for our Sunday Service!
The service is an important opportunity to listen to the Dharma. In Jodo Shinshu, we deeply value listening to the teachings of Amida Buddha as the foundation of our spiritual path. Along with listening to the Dharma, we praise the Buddha's virtue by chanting sutras and singing Buddhist gathas. Let us come together to embrace the warmth and kindness of Amida Buddha. We would be delighted to have you join us.
Morning Service: Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM – 8:30 AM
Join us for a refreshing and peaceful start to the day. Each morning, we chant the sutra during this service.
